<p>The third Cleveland Pen Club meetup is in the books!<br />
We had a great gathering on July 27, just before the DC pen show.<br />
We played a very fun “20 Questions” again, were treated to another presentation from Howard, and enjoyed great conversation around our pens, inks, and papers.<br />
Some super items were brought in for the giveaway table as well.</p>

<p>Fountain Pen Season (haha) is nearly upon us, and there are a lot of coming events to share:</p>

<p>Thanks to all who attended our second meeting on April 27!
It was a great crowd again with familiar faces and newcomers alike.
I so enjoy talking pens, inks, and paper with people who love them as much as I do.
Sean was a great sport to entertain us with a 20 Questions game.
Following that, we were treated to a presentation by Howard Edelstein on vintage demonstrator pens.
He shared a lot of great fountain pen history and let us see and handle some of these great early pens.
He talked about books on fountain pens, among them Stuart Schneider and George Fischler’s two books, The Book of Fountain Pens and Pencils, and Fountain Pens and Pencils, The Golden Age of Writing Instruments.
Another is Fountain Pens, Vintage and Modern by Andreas Lambrou.
After our meeting Howard sent me information from Ranga Pens, a talented Indian pen maker.
Their website is <a href="https://www.rangapens.com">www.rangapens.com</a>.
Last, Howard forwarded me an email from the Central Ohio Pen Club in the Columbus area, which is holding a meeting on May 18.
Their website is <a href="https://www.ohiopens.org">www.ohiopens.org</a>.
Thanks again, Howard!</p>

<p>Kat shared with me an interesting article on inks from Rick Propas, which I have attached.
(Editor’s Note: Please email us at <a href="mailto:clevelandpenclub@clevelandpen.club">clevelandpenclub@clevelandpen.club</a> for a copy of this article)
I learned a lot from it.</p>

<p>Our next Cleveland Pen Club meetup is scheduled for Sunday, July 27, 2025 at the same location - Cuyahoga County Public Library - Independence Branch, 6361 Selig Dr, Independence, OH.
As always, bring your fountain pen enthusiasm, your favorite pens, inks and paper, and a snack to share if you like.</p>

<p>If you have any questions or comments or ideas for meeting activities, feel free to send them my way.
If you have any fountain pen related resources you’d like to share with all of us, contact me and I can put it in a follow-up email.</p>

<p>Enjoy your pens, ink, and paper.
Keep an eye out for a reminder email in July about the next meetup.
The information will be added to the website as well.
Spread the word to anyone else you know in the Cleveland area who is interested in the club.
I look forward to seeing everyone in a few months!</p>

<p>Hey, it’s Amelorate.
I wrote the backbones of the website you’re reading now.
Unfortunately, I’ve got severe programmer-brain, so a lot of the things on this website don’t really work the way you’d expect.
For those in the know, the magic words are this is a Static Site hosted on <a href="https://github.com/clevelandpenclub/clevelandpenclub.github.io">Github</a> <a href="https://pages.github.com">Pages</a>.
Comments are done using <a href="https://giscus.app">Giscus</a>.</p>

<p>For the rest of you, you’re the target audience of this guide.</p>

<h1 id="how-the-website-is-made">How The Website Is Made</h1>

<p>You don’t really need to understand this part of the article to follow the other sections below, but it’s probably good to have an understanding instead of me just telling you what buttons to press.</p>

<p>This website is published on Github Pages, which is a free service designed for computer programmers to host simple documentation about their projects online.
Using Github Pages, you can make Static Sites only.
That means that any pages that change because of user input needs to go through Github, instead of being able to simply change the page.
That’s why you need a Github account to comment, and to edit pages.
Also because Github Pages was designed for programmers, a lot of the words they use for things are very obtuse.
You kind of need an entire glossary just to understand what they’re really saying.</p>

<p>In terms of how the website is laid out, it’s basically just a folder on a computer.
There’s files in the folder, and the way the files are laid out and the text inside the files determines the contents of the website.
When you put a file in the _posts folder with the right name, it’ll be displayed as a blog post.
And if you put a file elsewhere, it’ll be hosted on the web at that path.</p>

<h1 id="comments-sections">Comments Sections</h1>

<p>To leave a comment, just click the Sign In With Github button, authorize the app, and you should be able to write your comment.
If you don’t have a Github account, you’ll be given the opportunity to create one.
The other parts of this guide will also prompt you to either sign into your account or create one when it’s needed.</p>

<h2 id="how-to-get-an-email-when-someone-comments">How To Get An Email When Someone Comments</h2>

<p>If you really want to be involved, you can sign up to be emailed whenever anyone comments on an article or has something to say about the website.</p>

<p>In order to do so, first <a href="https://github.com/clevelandpenclub/clevelandpenclub.github.io">click this link to navigate to the website’s Github Repository.</a>
Then, you’ll click the 👁️Watch button near the top right of your screen.</p>

<p>There’s a few options for how many emails you’ll get:</p>
<ul>
<li>All Activity will send you an email whenever anyone comments, makes changes to the website, proposes changes to the website, or really does anything related to the website.</li>
<li>Custom lets you select which things will email you.
    <ul>
<li>We use Issues for things that are to-do.
For example, if there’s a bug with the website or something that’s incomplete, we’d create an issue.
Suggestions for articles to write would also be an issue.</li>
<li>Pull Requests are suggestions for changes to the website that someone’s already written.
For example, if someone’s written an article for us that’ll be a Pull Request.</li>
<li>The last feature that we use are Discussions.
When you make a comment on an article, it’ll create a discussion and reply to it with that comment.
However, there is a sour point: If someone reacts to an article that has zero reactions and zero comments, it’ll send you an annoying and confusing email.
Sorry, this can’t be fixed.
I wish I could, but it’s one of those things where everyone you complain to points the finger at someone else.
In the first place, there’s nobody to complain to because nobody’s being paid for any of this.</li>
    </ul>
  </li>
</ul>

<p><img src="/assets/CommentTutorial1.png" alt="Arrow pointing to the Watch button" /></p>

<p><img src="/assets/CommentTutorial2.png" alt="Dropdown that appears when you click the Watch button" /></p>

<p>–</p>

<p><img src="/assets/CommentTutorial3.png" alt="Options popup when you click Custom" /></p>

<h1 id="creating-a-post">Creating a Post</h1>

<p>You may have noticed the <a href="/tools/new-post.html">Make a new post</a> link on the main page.
Unsuprisingly, this is the first part of making a new post.
Simply fill in the title of your article, and if the date of the article isn’t today you can change it using the date selector.
If your title has special characters, you’ll have to copy and paste the section of code at the <strong>beginning</strong> of your post or else the special characters will be removed.
Also, if you want your post to have a comment section, you can click the checkbox.
You’ll have to paste that section of code at the <strong>end</strong> of your post for it to work.
Then, click <em>Next</em>.</p>

<p>If you’ve got access to edit the website directly, then you’ll just be able to write your article in the box.
If you don’t have access, you’ll have to click the <em>Fork this repository</em> button, and then you’ll be able to write it.
Forking a repositiory is like making a copy of the website onto computer so you can make changes to it.
However, instead of your computer it’ll be copied to Github’s computers instead.</p>

<p>Once you’ve got the editing screen open, you can write your post here in <a href="https://docs.github.com/en/get-started/writing-on-github/getting-started-with-writing-and-formatting-on-github/basic-writing-and-formatting-syntax">Github Flavored Markdown</a>.
You can find a <a href="https://gist.github.com/Myndex/5140d6fe98519bb15c503c490e713233">quick reference for Markdown here.</a>
Markdown is a way of writing documents that allows you to use plain text in any editor to create a web page.
If you’ve ever used WordPerfect or WordStar for Microsoft DOS, it’s kind of like that.</p>

<p>Make sure to credit yourself at the end of your article by writing something like <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">--Amelorate</code>.</p>

<p>Once you’ve written your article, you should click <em>Commit changes…</em>, and then <em>Commit changes</em>/<em>Propose changes</em> in the popup.
You don’t really need to change the Commit message or the description if it’s for a new article.
The default message is good enough.</p>

<p>If you’ve got access to edit the website directly, then you’re done!
If you don’t then you’ve got to continue on to create a Pull Request, which is a formal request to make a change to the website.
Just click <em>Create pull request</em>, and then once again click <em>Create pull request</em> on the new screen.
Amelorate will get an email and he’ll put your changes online soon.</p>

<p>In terms of copyright, the Cleveland Pen Club website is licensed under <a href="https://creativecommons.org/public-domain/cc0/">Creative Commmons Zero.</a>
This means that the webite, everything written on it, and all its pictures entirely lack copyright and are in the Public Domain.
If this is a problem, you could include a different license at the bottom of the article you’ve written as long as the Cleveland Pen Club and Github are allowed to distriute the file and make changes as needed.</p>

<p>Also, to make pictures that fit the style of this site you could use the Nomo Cam app on your phone.
However while the app creates pictures that are very aesthetic, they’re not very easy to look at if you want to actually see the details of your pen.
Amelorate’s got just the solution though.
He wrote the <a href="/tools/instax-editor">Instax Editor Tool</a>, which you can use to edit pictures you’ve already taken to have the instant picture-style border, while preserving all the quality of the original photo.
It doesn’t work on mobile phones though.</p>

<h2 id="editing-existing-posts">Editing Existing Posts</h2>

<p>The website’s posts are stored in the <a href="https://github.com/clevelandpenclub/clevelandpenclub.github.io/tree/main/_posts">_posts folder</a> in Github.
You can edit a post by clicking the post you want to edit, and then clicking the pencil icon in the top left corner.
Once you’re done, hit <em>Commit changes…</em>, and give it a message describing which post you’re editing and what kind of a change you’ve made in one sentence.
Additional details about your changes can be added in the description.
Then, just do the same thing you did with Creating a Post in terms of clicking <em>Commit changes</em> if you have access or <em>Propose changes</em> if you don’t.</p>

<p><img src="/assets/EditTutorial.png" alt="Arrow pointing to the edit button" /></p>

<h2 id="editing-other-pages">Editing Other Pages</h2>

<p>On the top bar of the website, there’s pages like Sophants, Specimines, Story, and so on.
These are kept in the <a href="https://github.com/clevelandpenclub/clevelandpenclub.github.io">base folder of ther website’s Github</a>, and they can be edited much like posts.
Files that end in <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">.md</code> are pages that you can edit.
Files that don’t end in <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">.md</code> are important for keeping the website working.
You might want to avoid touching those.</p>

<p>Most of the pages here are pretty simple, but there are a few complications.</p>
<ul>
<li><code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">README.MD</code> is the home page of the website.</li>
  <li><code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">sophants.md</code> and <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">specimines.md</code> are both really complicated:
Both of these pages use a data-driven approach, where all of their actual content is stored in the <a href="https://github.com/clevelandpenclub/clevelandpenclub.github.io/tree/main/_data">_data folder.</a>
If you know how to edit YAML, feel free to edit this.
If you don’t, don’t feel obligated to learn it.
Just ask Amelorate, and she’ll take care of it.</li>

It wasn’t hard at all to find the meeting room, although it was a little scary to open the unlabeled door hoping I wasn’t bursting into someone else’s meeting uninvited.
Maybe we could get some sort of sign we can hang up to welcome people?
I made a beeline to the closest seat to the door, and I got to introduce myself to my closest neighbors and penfriends.
I brought some of my most interesting pens, but I was supprised to learn that my Pilot Myu in Medium proved to be the most popular.
It seems like most people are only able to find the Fine nib?
The Medium nib was just what I happened to find first at the Ohio Pen Show last November, so that’s the one I bought.
Usually, I don’t like Medium nibs, but the Pilot one is so nice that I made an exception.</p>

<p>Once things started to wind down, I moved to the other side of the room to interact with the other group.
There, I got to look at Howard’s collection.
He had a lot of vintage mechanical pencils that were retrofit into being ballpoints.
The highlight of this category of his collection was a Parker 61 fountain pen that had its nib replaced with a ballpoint refill.
It looked kinda cursed, so I love it.
He told me that the guy who made these conversions had a stroke a few years ago, and he hasn’t been able to do them since.</p>

<p>The pen in his collection that left the largest impression on me was his Omas 360 in Wild Celluloid.
I’ve actually seen a picture of this pen – The youtuber Doodlebud said his grail pen was this exact variant, but he changed his mind when he learned the price.
I got to hold the pen in question, and it was breathtaking.
This morning, I actually ordered a Majohn V60, which is a clone of the Omas.
I know it won’t be exactly the same, but given how comfortable to hold the Omas was I think the Majohn will be (perhaps) 90% as nice.
When I mentioned this to Howard, he said he was unfamiliar with Majohn as a brand, so I gave him a quick rundown on the company.
He gave me his buisiness card and asked me to email him some links to some of their pens.
I should have taken a picture of the Omas for the <a href="/specimines">Specimines page</a>, though.</p>

<p>At the very end, I took a look at the ink samples table we had set up by the window.
There were a lot, and I had 4 samples to add to the pile.
There was also a Noodler’s Konrad fountain pen, and it really cought my eye.
One of my eventual goals is to have a complete collection of Noodler’s pens, and the Konrad was missing from my inventory.
Then later, I was also encoraged to take the other Noodler’s pen there, a Nib Creaper in some sort of purple color.
For some reason, it smells like grapes?
Is this the true solution to most people’s Noodler’s smell problem?
The problem is that I like the Noodler’s smell.
It makes me feel alive.
I also took a lot of ink samples – eight of them.
It was peer pressure.
There were a lot of ink samples, and Michelle didn’t want to have to take them all home and bring them back for our next meeting in April.</p>

<p>As people slowly trickled out, I was part of the small group of people that were cleaning up and trying (mostly failing) to leave in a timely manner.
We just had so many things to talk about, after all.
One of the subjects was how to arrange the tables next time to encorage people to talk to each other.
Of the more interesting suggestions was to arrange them in a hollow astrisk shape (like a * symbol but without the center).
My suggestion was to just have the tables in a long line.
That would encorage people to sit at both sides of the table, which was a problem this time because of the U shape we had the tables in.
I think that a long line would also minimize the number of independent groups, which wasn’t a major problem this time but could be with other table arrangements.
A long line might not be space efficent enough, but we had plenty of space in our meeting room.</p>

<p>The other topic when we were leaving was the distribution of leftover snacks.
We definately brought too many.
The chocolate chips cookies from Costco were less than 1/3rd eaten, and the Keebler chocolate-coated cookies were untouched.
I ended up taking the chocolate chip cookies because I really like chocolate chip cookies, but also because I can bring it to my workplace and it’ll be gone before the day is over.
The remaining people helped Michelle carry her bannana boxes filled with club materials into her car, but I didn’t have anything to carry so I was sharing holding the door open duty with Michelle’s son.</p>

Unlike Lamy, the pen is a very dark green.
Being a Japanese Domestic Market-exclusive pen sold by only one retailer (I’m not sure if it’s sold by CrossLand directly or some other seller on behalf of CrossLand), there are almost no pictures on the internet.
The <a href="https://item.rakuten.co.jp/bungunoarukurashi/4902505999598/">listing on Rakuten</a> has only five pictures, one heavily photoshopped and the rest under artificial lighting.
Being the proud owner of such a pen, I decided to take some better pictures on my iPhone 13 Mini under difuse indoor sunlight and overcast Ohio winter lighting.</p>

<p>Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are enjoying the holiday season.
Thank you to all those who responded to the Google form about our first pen club meeting.
Based on the responses I got, I selected a central location and reserved it.
Our inaugural Cleveland Pen Club meeting will take place on Sunday, January 26, 2025 in the meeting room at the Independence Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library from 1:15 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. (On Sundays the library doesn’t open until 1:00 p.m., so 1:15 p.m. was the first slot they offered.) The library, which I visited, is located at 6361 Selig Drive in Independence.
There is plenty of parking and the meeting room is spacious.
The lighting is probably fine, but I will bring my rechargeable desk lamps just in case and I encourage everyone who owns one to do the same.
There are electrical outlets along the walls—if you want to bring lamps that need to be plugged in, extension cords may prove very helpful.</p>

<p>If this meeting time and venue seem convenient going forward, I will reserve the room again in the same time slot on the fourth Sundays in April, July, and October so that we are meeting quarterly.
Attendance or a commitment to attend will not be mandatory.</p>

<p>I have gathered quite a few different ideas we can consider for meeting activities down the road, but the first one will be very low-key.
Bring pens and inks you want to show off.
If you wish, bring ink to swatch, swap or give away.
Bring your favorite writing paper.
I look forward to sharing our love of fountain pens and getting to know everyone a little.
By the way, please invite anyone else you talk with who is interested!</p>

<p>This is an excerpt from the Cuyahoga County Public Library system Rules for Use, just so everyone is aware: “Meeting Room attendees must follow the Library’s Code of Conduct.
Meetings must be conducted so as not to disturb others.
Young children accompanying adult users of the meeting room shall not be left unattended in the library.
Advertising or selling products or services is strictly prohibited in library meeting rooms.
Groups may serve refreshments.
Each group is responsible for their own clean up.
Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on Library premises.” Frankly, my takeaway from this is that we can bring food!
Feel free to bring a snack to share if you wish.</p>

<p>Finally, in the last section of the Google form, in the “additional comments” section at the end, at least two kind souls offered help with planning and logistics.
Google, however, failed to let me know who left those comments.
If it was you, and you are still willing to help, please contact me directly—I would love to include you!</p>

<p>Feel free to get in touch with any questions.
I hope everyone has wonderful holidays and a strong start to the new year, and I look forward to our meeting next month.</p>

Happy aftermath of Fountain Pen Day and Ohio Pen Show weekend!
Hope your pens and inks are bringing you much joy.</p>

<p>I am excited to begin a pen club here in sunny Cleveland, Ohio.
You received this email because you expressed interest at the Ohio Pen Show.
I thought it was a wonderful event as usual!
I asked a lot of questions at the show and picked up some ideas for making our pen club a success.</p>

<p>Here is a Google form I created for initial data gathering: (form now closed).
Kindly take a moment to complete it so I can put together our first meeting, likely in January - or email/call/text me with any questions.
I look forward to hearing from everyone!</p>

<p>There is one Cleveland area person I hoped to see at the show, but he was not in attendance–Howard Edelstein.
If anyone has his contact information, please spread the word to him and to any other fountain pen lovers you know in northeast Ohio.</p>

<p>Thanks and I look forward to hearing from everyone!</p>
